Don’t learn Spanish words one by one. Learn them in families.
When you learn a new word, look for the related noun, verb and adjective. They won’t always follow exactly the same pattern, but making these connections will help you remember vocabulary more easily and recognise new words when you see them.
Here are 9 more word families to continue practising.
1. SORPRESA → SORPRENDER → SORPRENDENTE
sorpresa — surprise
Something unexpected.
Tengo una sorpresa para ti.
I have a surprise for you.
sorprender — to surprise
To cause surprise because something unexpected happens.
Su respuesta me sorprendió muchísimo.
His answer surprised me a lot.
sorprendente — surprising
Something unexpected or remarkable.
Los resultados fueron sorprendentes.
The results were surprising.
2. CULPA → CULPAR → CULPABLE
culpa — fault / blame
Responsibility for something bad or wrong.
No fue culpa mía.
It wasn’t my fault.
culpar — to blame
To say or believe that somebody is responsible for something.
No puedes culparme por lo que pasó.
You can’t blame me for what happened.
culpable — guilty
Responsible for doing something wrong.
Se sentía culpable por haber mentido.
He felt guilty for having lied.
💡 You’ll also hear:
El acusado fue declarado culpable.
The defendant was found guilty.
3. MENTIRA → MENTIR → MENTIROSO
mentira — lie
Eso es mentira.
That’s a lie.
mentir — to lie
No me mientas. Dime la verdad.
Don’t lie to me. Tell me the truth.
mentiroso / mentirosa — liar / dishonest
No te fíes de él. Es muy mentiroso.
Don’t trust him. He lies a lot.
4. DESARROLLO→DESARROLLAR → DESARROLLADO
desarrollo — development
El desarrollo de esta tecnología ha sido muy rápido.
The development of this technology has been very fast.
desarrollar — to develop
La empresa quiere desarrollar nuevos productos.
The company wants to develop new products.
desarrollado / desarrollada — developed
Es un sistema muy desarrollado.
It’s a highly developed system.
5. PRODUCTO → PRODUCIR→ PRODUCTIVO
producto — product
Este es uno de nuestros productos más populares.
This is one of our most popular products.
producir — to produce
Esta fábrica produce miles de coches al año.
This factory produces thousands of cars every year.
productivo / productiva — productive
Hoy he tenido un día muy productivo.
I’ve had a very productive day today.
💡 Remember: a word family doesn’t have to contain just one noun, verb, or adjective. Sometimes we find several words from the same category, each with a different meaning or use.
For example, from producir we get two very common nouns: producto and producción.
6. PAGO → PAGAR → PAGADO
pago — payment
Todavía no hemos recibido el pago.
We haven’t received the payment yet.
pagar — to pay
Tengo que pagar la factura del teléfono.
I have to pay the phone bill.
pagado / pagada — paid
La factura ya está pagada.
The bill has already been paid.
7. ARREGLO → ARREGLAR → ARREGLADO
arreglo — repair / arrangement / solution
El arreglo del coche costó 300 euros.
The car repair cost €300.
arreglar — to fix / repair / sort out
Tengo que arreglar el ordenador.
I have to fix the computer.
It can also mean to solve a problem:
No te preocupes, lo arreglaremos.
Don’t worry, we’ll sort it out.
arreglado / arreglada — fixed / dressed up
El problema ya está arreglado.
The problem has been sorted out.
And when talking about appearance:
Hoy estás muy arreglada.
You look very dressed up today.
8. CALOR → CALENTAR → CALIENTE
calor — heat
Hace muchísimo calor hoy.
It’s really hot today.
calentar — to heat / heat up
Voy a calentar la comida.
I’m going to heat up the food.
caliente — hot
Cuidado, el café está muy caliente.
Careful, the coffee is very hot.
⚠️ Useful distinction:
Hace calor. ✅
El café está caliente. ✅
We never say hace caliente to talk about the weather.
9. NEGOCIACIÓN → NEGOCIAR → NEGOCIADO
negociación — negotiation
Las negociaciones duraron varias semanas.
The negotiations lasted several weeks.
negociar — to negotiate
Tenemos que negociar el precio.
We need to negotiate the price.
negociado / negociada — negotiated
Ese fue el precio negociado con el proveedor.
That was the price negotiated with the supplier.

→ Is there a related noun?
→ Is there a verb?
→ Is there an adjective?
The forms won’t always be predictable, but looking for these connections will help you build vocabulary much faster.
